In
February 2004 Marshall and Edna traveled to Bolzano Italy for an International
Dwarf Fruit Tree Association conference and Tour. The IDFTA tour featured
high density orchards in South Tyrol Valley, a region known for centuries
of fruit production. This 2 mile wide and 60 mile long fertile valley
is nestled in the Dolomites mountains . Points of interest included
European apple production and the latest in orchard equipment. Italian
apple growers, we learned, plant 1400 to 1500 dwarf trees per acre
compared to our semi dwarf trees at 180 to 300 trees per acre.It was
a great learning experience. Fortunately for Edna it wasn't all fruit
trees and tractors - we managed side trips to Venice and Florence
also.
